"Thank you to all the Grammy voters, whose recognition of Music by John Williams means the world to me and our Amblin team, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, and congratulations to our partners at Imagine and the Walt Disney Company," Spielberg, who did not accept the honor in person, said in a statement.

“This acknowledgment is obviously deeply meaningful to me because it validates what I have known for over 50 years: John Williams’ influence on culture and music is immeasurable and his artistry and legacy is unrivaled," Spielberg continued. "I am proud to be associated with Laurent’s beautiful film.”

Music by John Williams premiered at the AFI Fest in October 2024 and chronicles the celebrated composer’s career scoring some of the most iconic films in Hollywood history, including Jaws, Star Wars, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Home Alone, Schindler's List, Superman, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind (among others).

The documentary, now streaming on Disney+, features interviews with a slew of Williams' collaborators and friends, as well as stars from many of the films Williams scored. They include Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, Kate Capshaw, Gustavo Dudamel, J.J. Abrams, Chris Martin, Ron Howard, Chris Columbus, George Lucas, Itzhak Perlman, Lawrence Kasdan, Yo-Yo Ma, Ke Huy Quan, James Mangold, Alan Silvestri, David Newman, Thomas Newman, Seth MacFarlane, Anne-Sophie Mutter and Branford Marsalis.

Lucasfilm, Amblin Documentaries and Imagine Documentaries produced the film.

EGOT is one of the most elusive titles in all of Hollywood.

To date, 21 people have picked up the honor: Richard Rodgers (1962), Helen Hayes (1977), Rita Moreno (1977), John Gielgud (1991), Audrey Hepburn (1994), Marvin Hamlisch (1995), Jonathan Tunick (1997), Mel Brooks (2001), Mike Nichols (2001), Whoopi Goldberg (2002), Scott Rudin (2012), Robert Lopez (2014), Andrew Lloyd Webber (2018), Tim Rice (2018), John Legend (2018), Alan Menken (2020), Jennifer Hudson (2022), Viola Davis (2023), Elton John (2024), and Benji Pasek and Justin Paul (2024).

The term EGOT was coined by Miami Vice actor Philip Michael Thomas, who first told it to the in 1984 at the height of the NBC action show's success. "That stands for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony," he said. "Hopefully in the next five years I will win all those awards."

Thomas has yet to be nominated for any of those awards. But he did have the letters engraved in a gold pendant he wore around his neck — a choice parodied in an episode of 30 Rock.

The Grammys are broadcasting live from Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on CBS or stream them live and on-demand on Paramount+.
