Robyn is opening up about her IVF experience as a single mother in her 40s.
The āDancing on My Ownā singer first announced that sheād welcomed her first child, son Tyko, in 2023. In a recent interview with *The Guardian**, *she opened up about her āpretty hardcoreā fertility journey and parenting on her own.
āIĀ thought it would happen much sooner,ā Robyn told the outlet about having kids. āBut then I think motherhood in a conventional heterosexual relationship, in my life at least, has been really hard to reconcile with what I think I would have to do to make that work.ā

The Grammy-nominated singer explained that she held off on starting a family because āthe idea of having children in the relationships IĀ was in felt like a very risky thing to doā at the time.
āI would have been able to accept things that werenāt great in a relationship without children,ā she said. āBut, when kids exist, every single thing that the other person does is so important. The idea of having children in the relationships I was in felt like a very risky thing to do. I just felt [like] that was more scary than waiting.ā
Robyn revealed that sheād originally frozen her eggs at age 34, but that she had to start the process over again in her 40s after being unable to access them due to the coronavirus pandemic.

āI didnāt know if it was goingĀ toĀ work.Ā IĀ did a fewĀ rounds. It was a f---ing rollercoaster, but also it makes you think about things that you otherwise wouldnāt,ā she said. āWhat is my identity as someone with children, and what is it without? Itās extremely existential.ā
The āCall Your Girlfriendā singer noted that it was challenging both physically and emotionally going through the process alone. āI had seen myself having a kid in a stable relationship. I was sad to let go of that,ā she said. āIt felt like a failure.ā

She continued, āI donāt think any human being can say, āI have aĀ right to have a child.ā But if you want it, you canāt really question your desire to be a parent. You can question how you do it and who you do it with, but you canāt question the actual need. ItāsĀ like saying, āWhy are we here?āā
While Robyn noted that her fertility journey came with its own hardships, she called the entire experience a āprivilegeā that she doesnāt take for granted.Ā āIt is pretty hardcore. Itās definitely a challenge, physically and psychologically,ā she said. Putting on a comedic voice, she added, āBut āboohoo, I had to do IVF,' itās also a privilege. The fact that itās even possible! Itās something that costs money, and a lot of people donāt even have the option.ā

She also shed light on what it's been like raising Tyko as a single parent.
āItās very, very taxing to be a single mum or dad. IĀ grew up that way,ā she said, referring to her parentsā own divorce when she was a child. āMy mother was tired and she was struggling, and I just didnāt want to repeat things that Iād been through as a kid.ā
She added, āI donāt want to expose my mum. Sheās a great mum, but, you know, just the lack of time, the lack of energy to be present, to not feel happy with your situation."
