Mitch McConnellâs staff just released a health update in a new statement amid the Republican Senatorâs six-week hospital stay.
On Saturday, July 25, David Popp, a spokesperson for McConnell, shared a statement with The Washington Post.
âThe Senator continues to meet with staff regarding Senate and Kentucky business, including discussions on defense appropriations, foreign policy, the farm bill, constituent services and constituent federal grant requests,â Popp explained. âAs the Senator continues to improve in rehab, we will be sure to keep you .â
On June 14, the Senator from Kentucky, 84, was hospitalized. McConnellâs team finally broke its silence one month later with a lengthy statement and a photo of the Senator in a hospital bed.
âLast month, I took a fall which landed me in the hospital,â McConnell noted. The politician explained that he suffered no broken bones and did not suffer a stroke, heart attack, concussion, or hemorrhage. However, he was âbriefly unconscious,â taken to a hospital, and developed a âmild case of pneumoniaâ during his stay.

âI can assure you that Iâve been a good patient. At my age, I tend to do what my doctors tell me to do. Iâve submitted to every test they can think of to help figure out what caused this incident,â McConnell detailed. âAnd Iâm continuing to do everything they ask to speed my recovery. In fact, with signs of continued progress, Iâve been able to move from hospital care to a rehabilitation center where Iâll keep regaining my strength.â

To conclude his statement, McConnell promised, âIâll keep working hard to get back on the Senate floor as soon as possible. And Iâll keep you posted on the progress of my recovery. Until then, Iâm so grateful for your prayers and well wishes.â
McConnellâs health update came after political commentator and strategist Scott Jennings urged him to âroutinely update his constituents on how heâs doingâ on CNNâs The Arena with Kasie Hunt.
âTruthfully, I think a little transparency on the front end here would have saved him a whole lot of grief,â Jennings said. âBut that didnât happen, and they are where they are now.â
