Lamar Odom has checked into rehab after his recent DUI arrest.

The former NBA star, 46, entered a 30-day program at iRely Recovery in Los Angeles, his manager Gina Rodriguez told PEOPLE on Thursday, Jan. 29. TMZ was first to report the news.

iRely Recovery, on its website, describes its program as taking a holistic approach to treatment, addressing physical, emotional and spiritual health through personalized care plans that can include medically assisted detox, residential therapy and ongoing aftercare support.

Rodriguez said Odom decided to seek treatment specifically for marijuana use out of concern it could lead to a relapse into harder, more dangerous drugs.

“After a recent incident, he took a step back to reflect and address triggers he’s been dealing with,” Rodriguez, adding that Odom made the “personal decision” to enter treatment to “reset and focus on his health.”

She went on to note that Odom is taking "full responsibility and choosing to be proactive about his wellbeing."

"Lamar is grateful for the support and is committed to moving forward in a healthy, positive way," Rodriguez added.

Odom was arrested early on Saturday, Jan. 17 and charged with driving under the influence along with two traffic violations: driving more than 41 miles per hour over the speed limit and improper lane change or failure to maintain lane. Court records reviewed by PEOPLE showed an order for his release on his own recognizance was also filed that day.

Police sources told TMZ Odom’s car “reeked of weed” when he was pulled over and that he admitted to smoking earlier in the day.

Odom — who spent much of his NBA career from 1999 to 2014 with the Los Angeles Lakers — has long been open about his experience with substance abuse.

He was previously arrested for DUI in California in 2013. In that case, he reached a plea agreement, receiving three years of probation and agreeing to attend a three-month alcohol education program. He was also asked to pay $1,800 in fines and penalties

Following his 2013 arrest, Odom checked himself into a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center. But two years later, in 2015, he was hospitalized following a near-death overdose on cocaine, alcohol and cannabis in a Las Vegas brothel.

"My heart stopped twice," he wrote in his 2019 memoir Darkness to Light, while recounting the experience. "I had twelve seizures and six strokes. My lungs collapsed and my kidneys ruptured. I was on life support. Everyone I’d ever loved was looking at me through bleary eyes."

"[The overdose] made me realize I couldn't live the way I'd been living," he said.

Since then, Odom has been outspoken about his recovery. In 2021, he revealed he was using ketamine under medical supervision to treat his addiction.

Ketamine, a synthetic drug with hallucinogenic effects, was approved as a short-acting anesthetic by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) during the 1970s, according to the agency's website. While often abused as a "club drug," small doses of ketamine have been found useful in treating some mental health conditions, and a nasal spray for treatment-resistant depression was approved by the FDA in 2019.

Calling it the "healthy high," Odom told GMA the process has helped him overcome the urge to use drugs such as cocaine. "I don't wake up looking to do lines … or waking up in a dark place or feeling unfulfilled," he said. "I'm alive. I'm sober. I'm happy."

Odom is set to appear in court in Nevada on March 17.

The athlete was previously married to Khloé Kardashian, and he shares children Lamar Jr. and Destiny with ex Liza Morales. The former couple also welcomed son Jayden, who died at 6 months old in 2006 from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
