Joel Edgerton pretended to be a different blockbuster star while signing an autograph for fan ‘on the verge of tears’

Joel Edgerton says that he once had an experience with a fan who was “on the verge of tears.”
“I was like, ‘Wow, I’m really having an effect over this woman,’” he remembers.
However, Edgerton realized that the woman mistook him for a different Australian star.
Joel Edgerton wants to give the people what they want — even if what they want is not Joel Edgerton.
While visiting EW’s 2026 San Diego Comic-Con Studio, the Warrior star shares a hilarious incident when a fan mistook him for another Australian actor who found Hollywood success.
“One time I had a young lady run up to me and say, ‘Oh my God, Oh my God, can I get your autograph?’” he recalls. “And she was on the verge of tears. And I was like, ‘Wow, I’m really having an effect over this woman.’”
Edgerton’s tune changed when he realized his admirer had made a mistake. “She said, ‘Can you sign your autograph?’ And then she held it to her heart, and she goes, ‘I just loved you in Avatar.’”
Edgerton, unfortunately, was not in any of the Avatar movies (nor anything related to Avatar: The Last Airbender), which means the emotional fan had the wrong guy entirely. But Edgerton still obliged her request.
“I just said, ‘Thank you. Thank you,’” he remembers. “Whenever people mistake me for a particular movie, I just say, ‘Thank you… Thank you for the compliments.’”
Edgerton laughs as he considers whether the confused fan eventually realized her mix-up.

“They go away and maybe work it out later,” he speculates. “And I’m sure she went, ‘J.E., what…’”

He adds, “She obviously thought I was Sam Worthington. He’s a good-looking guy.”
Edgerton’s comments followed his Dark Matter costar, Jennifer Connelly, discussing an A-lister that she is frequently mistaken for.
“I’ve gotten people insisting— going through security the other day, they’re like, ‘Oh my God, you’re Demi Moore,’” she says. “I was like, ‘I’m not.’ They were like, ‘You are.’ Again: ‘No. I’m really not. I’m not. I have my passport to show you.’”

Connelly also says that people assume she’s acted in movies that she had nothing to do with. “I had someone say to me, ‘You were so good in that movie with Brad Pitt,’ and I was like, ‘Not in a movie with Brad Pitt,’” she remembers. “They’re like, ‘Yes you are,’ I’m like, ‘I’m really not, I promise you.’”
Dark Matter season 2 premieres on Apple TV on Aug. 28.
