While Chip and Joanna Gaines's home remodels and restorations are usually smooth sailing, the couple recently revealed that their 2002 engagement wasn't exactly breezy.

Entertainment Now reported that Chip and Joanna, who wed nearly 23 years ago, discussed the day they got engaged while filming a season 17 episode ofShark Tank, which premiered on January 28. According to Joanna, she was concerned her now-husband was having a medical emergency.

ā€œHe told me that we were going to go backstage to some singer’s—like a little venue. And so, I show up. He gets down on his knees, but he trips on his jacket. So, I thought he was having a heart attack," said Joanna on Shark Tank Season 17, Episode 11.

Chip explained that he got stuck on his "long trench coat" when he tried to "get on [his] knee" for the proposal.

"I couldn’t get back up. I locked myself into this awkward position," said Chip.

Joanna then chimed in, "I thought he was struggling."

"I was tending to him,ā€ said Joanna, who has five children with Chip.

Chip & Joanna Gaines Talked About Maintaining Their Marriage

In a May 2025 interview with People magazine, the Gaineses shared how they've maintained their long-lasting marriage. Joanna said that she likes to try "a new thing" with her husband to strengthen their bond.

The couple then shared that they decided to take dancing lessons together. Joanna and Chip told the publication that neither of them possessed dancing skills before said lessons.

ā€œ[When we started] we didn’t know how to hold our hands. It’s hard to make eye contact with even your best friend and wife of 22 years," said Chip during the People interview. "It feels really strange, awkward. But then after two or three weeks, we started looking forward to those lessons. It was this sweet reminder that all of us could use refreshes and challenges in our relationships.ā€

Joanna also said that she believes "dancing is the most symbolic way of talking about, as a couple, ā€˜How do you stay in sync in life?’"

"We do really good in real life, we have our rhythm. But with dancing we were so off, it was surprising. We’ve done everything else so well, but this we totally suck at! But it was beautiful,ā€ said Joanna to People.
