Jeremy Clarkson has revealed that he chose not to grow anything on 200 acres of his farm as it’s become “impossible” for farmers to make money from growing food.

The TV presenter, whose efforts to run his Cotswold farm Diddly Squat are documented in docuseries Clarkson’s Farm, gave an update on the land while speaking out about Dame Angela Eagle’s recent appointment as Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Writing in his column, Clarkson urged for something to be done by the government over the farming sector’s financial struggles.

“Action is needed now because farmers have reached the point where it is quite simply impossible to make money from growing food,” he said in The Sun.

“This year, I have 200 acres on my farm where we grew nothing at all. We knew that if we planted it with wheat or barley, we would definitely make a loss.”

He added that he expects things to be “even worse” for farmers under the UK’s new prime minister, Andy Burnham, and shared his worries about Eagle running rural affairs.

“The only big worry for me right now – and I’m talking with my farming hat on – is that he’s put someone called Angela Eagle in charge of the countryside,” he wrote. “And so far, her only real claim to fame is that David Cameron once told her to ‘calm down, dear’.

“I’ve done some digging, though, and it seems she has never worked on a farm and has never run any kind of business. So putting her in charge of the countryside is like putting Alan Carr in charge of the Army,” he wrote. “Or me in charge of the diplomatic service. And that’s no good.”

Eagle previously served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions under Prime Minister Tony Blairm as well Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury and Minister of State for Pensions and Ageing Society for Gordon Brown.

Until recently, she was Minister of State for Food Security and Rural Affairs under Keir Starmer.

It’s been a difficult few years for Clarkson, who revealed in the penultimate episode of his Prime Video show in June that he had been diagnosed with cancer.

Revealing that he was told in May last year, Clarkson said that the cancer was aggressive but had been caught at a “really early” stage.

He later said that a post-treatment test two months ago found no indication of cancer and declared him in remission.

While fans are yet to hear whether the show will be back for a sixth series, the presenter was spotted filming with a crew at Cereals 2026 – a farming event held at Diddly Squat – in June.
