Dick Van Dyke and his wife, Arlene Silver, recalled the time he got an X-ray after he thought he had swallowed his dentures
After a visit to urgent care, the 99-year-old entertainer found their dog, Bootsy Poppins, chewing on his dentures
The couple, who got married in 2012, introduced Bootsy Poppins Van Dyke to the world in December 2023
It’s a dog-eat-dentures world in the Dick Van Dyke household.
The 99-year-old entertainer and author, who will turn 100 on Dec. 13, recently revealed that he once thought he swallowed his dental plate, only to later find them in the paws of the family dog, Bootsy Poppins.
Speaking at Vandy High Tea — hosted at the Van Dyke residence in Malibu, Calif., on Nov. 30 — he recalled the amusing anecdote, which also involved him going to urgent care to get an X-ray.

“I have to tell you about this dog. I have a dental plate here. You see that gap? Somehow it was nice and snug. It fell out. And I looked and I looked and I looked,” he said at the charity event, produced by Chris Isaacson Presents to raise funds to benefit the Van Dyke Endowment of the Arts and the in-development Dick Van Dyke Museum.
He continued, “I look under the dining room table, and this dog is chewing on my dental plate! She chewed it up to bits.”
His wife, Arlene Silver, who was also on the Vandy High Tea panel, then explained the urgent care visit. “We thought you swallowed it, remember? We had to do an X-ray,” she said, to which Van Dyke replied, “That’s right — we thought I swallowed it.”

Silver, 54, added, “So it was good news that we found it, right, Boots? ... Then Bootsy found it during rehearsal. We were relieved.”
The couple, who met at the SAG Awards in 2006 and got married in 2012, introduced their dog to the world in December 2023.
“Meet Bootsy Poppins Van Dyke 💜,” Silver wrote on Instagram at the time.
