Arlene Silver, Dick Van Dyke's wife, is giving fans a glimpse of the "weird, wonderful, awful weekend" in which the TV legend both celebrated his 100th birthday and discovered that his close friend Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, had been murdered.
"I can't not talk about this horrible thing," Silver tearfully noted in a video posted to her Instagram on Monday. "Dick's birthday was so amazing, so over-the-top beautiful, I was relieved and happy, and then this happened yesterday."
Silver explained that she and Van Dyke, who married in 2012, "talked to Rob two weeks ago on the phone, and Michele left so many messages for Dick's birthday. It's going to take me weeks to go through them, and Rob's are in those messages." Silver said that Van Dyke "didn't sleep" after learning of the Reiners' deaths, opting to "stay up" and wait for more information, despite having freshly turned 100.

"Dick has known Rob since he was a teenager on the Dick Van Dyke Show, and I've always been a fan of his work before I knew him. Rob and Carl were the first people I ever met with Dick," Silver explained.
Reiner's father Carl Reiner was a show business legend, having won 11 Emmys for his work alongside greats like Mel Brooks, Neil Simon, and Van Dyke on films, comedy specials, and series like It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Caesar's Hour, and The Dick Van Dyke Show, the pioneering sitcom Carl created in 1961, forging a bond between both Carl and his son with Van Dyke that lasted lifetimes.
"Rob and Michele were always together, like Dick and I," Silver continued. "I always felt part of the Reiner family. They always treated me like part of their family... I want to celebrate Dick, I want to keep doing that, but I also want to acknowledge this horrible thing. You never know, every day you never know."
When Carl Reiner died in 2020, Van Dyke eulogized him as "my idol," noting his Dick Van Dyke Show scripts "were never just funny, they always had something to say about us."

The bodies of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner were found by their 27-year-old daughter Romy in their Brentwood, Calif., home on Sunday afternoon. Nick Reiner, their 32-year-old son, was taken into police custody that evening and was subsequently charged with the murders of his parents on Tuesday. He faces life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty if charged.
